What is a Horseback Poker Ride?
Every summer Sleeping Indian Outfitters hosts two horseback poker rides to get the community together for some fun and to help raise money for a local charity of our choosing.
So, what is a horseback poker ride? On the day of the event everyone shows up to the ranch between 9AM and Noon. Some people bring their own horses, some people rent horses from us, and some people choose to just socialize in the dinner area for the day. Those going horseback sign up at the check in tent to sign the appropriate waivers and get a card. Your card is very important for the day. It is where your poker hands are recorded and it allows you to get food and drink out on the trail which you will pay for upon your return. You draw your first card for your poker hand and then you go get mounted up and head out on the trail.
The trail is clearly marked with flagging tape and you'll see lots of other riders a long the way. There are three check in locations out on the trail. At each of these stations you will draw another card to build the rest of your poker hand. At each stop there are beverages available and at the second stop there will be hamburgers and hot dogs available for lunch. If at any time during the ride you get tired or just need to head back, feel free to do so. We can allow you to draw the remainder of your cards for your hand back at the ranch. It is a beautiful trip and a great way to get to know some new people.
Once you arrive back to the ranch and take care of your steed, you will head back to the check in tent to pay for your day of fun and to enter your poker hand or hands into the system to see if you might be a winner! Have a bad hand of poker? Don't worry, we pay both low hand and high hand winners. 10% of all poker hand proceeds are donated to a Sublette County charity of our choice.
Around 5 or 6 o'clock the dinner bell will ring and the lid of the cooker is opened to reveal a perfectly prepared whole hog ready for feasting. With lots of sides and fixings to go along with it, if you leave hungry it's your own fault!
We hope to see you all for our ride this year! It is truly a fun day. When out on the trail please remember to be considerate of other riders. Not everyone out there may be as experienced as you. Also remember to preserve our beautiful backyard by not leaving behind any trash or garbage, including cigarette butts. Also remember safety first! We want to continue to host these events without seeing people get hurt! Use caution and common sense to help perpetuate a fun day!
